Prison Bedrooms

Through Prison Bedrooms my intension was to confront the paradoxes of life in the face of hardships that often take place in the privacy of one’s bedroom, regardless of the differences in culture, religion, or politics. The medley of conflicting ideas and historical events probed the role of the bedroom as a place of love, erotica, death, imprisonment, and torture. In this body of work I depicted Anne Frank attic, Harem chambers at Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, Marquis de Sade bedroom, and my grandmother home-hospital environment as places of drama, loneliness, and pain. But perhaps the bedroom can simply be understood as a place for dreams and nightmares.
