Joanna M. Wezyk (Jo) is a fine artist, curator, and art educator. Born and raised in Kraków, Poland, she moved to New York City to pursue her career as a children's book illustrator before transitioning to painting.
Her artistic practice spans various media, including traditional oil painting, alcohol inks on Yupo paper, and experimental digital imagery. Her work delves into themes of nostalgia, melancholia, abandonment, and concepts deeply rooted in both European and American history.
Joanna’s paintings explore intimacy and the restoration of forgotten or secret spaces, such as churches, bedrooms, and royal chambers, as well as the haunting remnants of American ghost towns, sublime mystical landscapes, and abandoned industrial giants.
Blending traditional techniques with innovative approaches, she experiments with oil glazing, gouaches, inks, and alcohol-based materials. These are processed and manipulated using digital tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Procreate, and a Wacom Intuos tablet.
Her work captures eerie, cinematic atmospheres, often illuminated by glimpses of light that evoke a sense of omniscient wisdom or quiet hope.
Wezyk holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, an MA from Kean University in Fine Arts Education, and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
She is a Painting Professor at the Fine Arts Department of Kean University in Union, NJ. In addition, she teaches Digital Fine Arts and Digital Photography, as well as Business Practices in Visual Arts.
Her paintings have become a part of many private collections and have been displayed across the globe in hundreds of exhibitions including Tina Kim Gallery in New York City, Kukje Gallery in Seoul, Galerie Pferim in Lacoste, France, Pinnacle Gallery in SCAD, Savannah, Georgia, CAM Galeri, Istanbul, Turkey, and Galeria Pryzmat, Krakow, Poland. Awards include the Paula Rhodes Memorial Award for Exceptional Achievement in Fine Arts, the Artists and Writers Educational and Development Foundation Grant, the Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Grant Program Award, and the Dedalus Foundation Fellowship Award.
